Super Retro GP Demo - Initial Impressions. Is this Virtua Racing 2...?
Welp, I've been asleep at the wheel for not jumping onto this one sooner than I have. Super Retro GP seems like a beautiful homage to #sega's #virtuaracing - this looks like it's shaping up to be a fantastic retro racer.

A quick playthrough on the Steam demo of Aero GPX - a full on spiritual sequel to F-Zero GX on the Gamecube and F-Zero X on the N64. I liked what I saw here! It definitely feels a bit more F-Zero X than GX like here with the rather sparsely detailed tracks, but for an indie title that (I believe) is just being handled by a 3 man team, this is impressive stuff. #AeroGPX #Fzero #nintendo

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing 2 дні тому

      I'm not familiar with that brand of wheel, but a common issue with stuff like this though is whether there's an option in your wheel software to separate the pedal axes - some emulators don't like them combined. I'd also double check in Model 2 Emulator that you've got Dinput selected in the game's ini setting file, not Xinput.

  • @CaseTheCorvetteMan

    You're losing loads of speed and this is why you're having trouble. You need to set up in the right position on track. On Advanced, the order is as follows: •4-2-4 very quickly, fast as you can •4-2-4 •4-1-4, need that extra kick of 1st •4-2-4, this will only work well if you exit the hairpin fast enough, and you can exit the final turn at 300kph+ Beginner is very easy, but you're starting out too wide to make the 4-2-4 work for you, can take that corner at 300kph+ Expert is a lot more complex, worth watching some videos of the Japanese player, can't think of his name at the moment but i'll get you a link. Very fast and very skilled player.

      @MrThunderwing 3 дні тому

      @@CaseTheCorvetteMan Ummmmm... Yeah. So, I get you thought you were maybe being helpful here, but, I'm not really sure why you felt you needed to re-explain to me the, more-or-less, exact same method for tackling the Advanced stage that I've been explaining to other people in this video (other than that final hairpin)? I'm already doing the two 4-2-4s after the tunnel, then a 4-1-3-4 before reaching the final hairpin. The Expert track is another matter, but I don't lose loads of speed on Dinosaur Canyon - I can keep pace with players that I know are experts at the game, and hell, I've even got some 2nd, 3rds and at least one 1st in big multiplayer games.

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing 4 дні тому

      Thanks. I'm kind of confused by this comment though because _I did label_ which version was which throughout the video, so I don't get why you think I didn't? In the four way split screen at 03:45 I put icons on screen showing which version is which - that screen position doesn't change when they show again - I even used different colour cars in each one to make it obvious. At 06:26 and 08:09 I put icons on screen showing which version is which. If there's a bit without an icon on screen, it should normally be obvious which version it is, because I'll be talking about it at the time - like when I mention the clouds obscuring the background in Outrun Online Arcade, the Sun being too bright in SPDX in Teknoparrot or the flames being missing from the PC port.

    I tried mapping the triggers to the right stick for analog acceleration and braking on the Steam Deck, but it wouldn't work. It was basically conflicting with the ZL and ZR inputs, with no noticeable way to rebind them for analog or digital input with different controller buttons. I would try making a new preset in the emulator settings page, but there is no option to map right stick directions as separate buttons. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it''s mapped to Steam Input instead of Xinput. Perhaps I should disable Steam Input for the emulator and roms, so I force set up Xinput and try again.

I have yet to test the gyro after this, but considering I'm using Ryujinx, I have no idea if there is a way to assign a control preset per game, because the emulator itself didn't inform me about said feature, unless it is tied to a configuration file. All I know is that I seem to have better luck running the roms through Emudeck, rather than the Steam client itself, but Emudeck doesn't have a feature that allows me to change the controls per game from my understanding.

    Great preview, and nailed it with the retro racer apathy description tbf. It's easy (relatively speaking) to copy the aesthetic of the classics, but few of them manage to reproduce how they *feel*. It's a tough ask of small indie devs to match the magic of truly legendary studios at the peak of their powers, but it is what it is. They're definitely getting better though, and there's far more arcadey racers being released now than at any point since the Blur/Split Second days, i reckon. I liken it to Doomy/Quake types of FPS falling out of fashion post-COD, etc and now there's absolutely loads of them. Oh, I did play this and am hopeful about it, but i couldn't get past the twitchy handling, even when messing with the sensitivity settings. Reminds me of playing Daytona on the Model 2 emulator with a 360 pad. Still Early Access though and the dev's said it's not final, so...🤞

Maybe also a commentator/announcer a bit more over the top and more animated. It's the little things in sound that also set Sega apart at the time. I don't know if the curb walls are there just temporary but would be good to be able to clip the edge of the grass and save it instead of hitting a hard wall and just dropping the speed when you're right at the edge (maybe this is removed in future releases). Otherwise this looks great so far.

    Sadly the engine sound is not great. The sound itself is ok, not as great as VR one but ok, but the engine doesn't rev enough and there is not enough rev difference between gears, and the sound loop at full speed is terrible. Like too many games lately, the gear change doesn't sound natural, and it just sound a bit bland, not dynamic, not powerfull enough, not over the top enough. We'll si if it improves for the final game, I hope so, because they got many things right on this one.

      I think the engine sounds fine personally, very VR like, but it's still only WIP at present, so plenty of opportunity for stuff to change.

      @@MrThunderwing It's weird how so many people can't detect issues that are obvious for others when it comes to engine sound. I see that all the time in sim racing. Clearly here the gears change is extremely bad, it sounds like a short throttle release, not like a gear change, particulartly for gears 6 and 7 (they should remove that 7th gear to start with), it's very noticable in the first seconds of the vidéo. It's also not powerful enough, not enough rev, it feels boring, while it should be gut-wrenching. In fact, it sounds more like the PS2 version of VR, it has the same issues (but VR PS2 is far worse). The funny thing is that some people don't even realize the PS2 version sound different, or don't realise it's worse, while it's a complete deal breaker for others.

      @@MrThunderwing I agree. I could care less about the engine sounds. I even turn the sound down. It has no impact on the gameplay.

      @@pinkimo_To start, the folks who call it a “deal-breaker” do recognize that the PS2 is a quarter of a decade old, right? It could replicate/play recordings of actual cars, but designing sound is a different thing, altogether. I realize SEGA consoles, like Dreamcast, are built with similar hardware as in the arcade - and therefore will replicate the sound better without too much work. I also get the idea of being a “gaming audiophile,” as a big fan of the OG audio chip-the 1979 Atari 400/800 POKEY-as well a its successor designed by the same engineers - the C64 SID chip that was better but couldn’t be as ahead of its time as the OG. Further, as an auto fan-who loves his BMW X3-I can even get behind the notion that the sound of an engine can break immersion in some cases. _However,_ the only way I see adding actual recordings of engine sounds to a Virtua-type game working is to *break immersion,* not the other way ‘round, because the graphics aren’t of the same Realism aesthetic. So, there would be a mismatch between the “Virtua-type” graphics and looped engine recordings, in such a game. For Gran Turismo and Forza, sure-their graphics, physics, and etc. are all about realism, but _Virtua Racing_ and _Super _*_Retro_*_ GP_ are obviously *not* games with a realism aesthetics - the clues are in the names. Beyond that the sound and graphics aesthetics generally “match” in some way, within a game, there’s actually much more to articulate about stylized, “artistic” representation, because it isn’t simply trying to replicate empirical reality. That’s what lithographs, cameras, phonograph cylinders, and gramophones did - and there’s a reason that the more realistic graphics can be, the more folks revisit older games and create new games that master old styles, which is not to mention “demakes.” Stylized games like this and _VR_ *emphasize the polygonal aspect of 3D video games’* racing. So, the sound should in some way “match” _that_ aethetic, not the same sound I hear when I push the button to start my Ultimate Driving Machine®️. That is, unless there’s an artistic reason to d so - an effect a designer wants to achieve. Those who think that graphically-stylized aesthetic games’ sound not replicating reality with high-quality recordings/loops of actual vehicles don’t understand how/why videogames are made the way they are. I mean, one could _intentionally_ mix the two types to achieve a certain effect, but the rationale that it *should sound like everyday life* in all circumstances is completely without merit or reason.
